Marek Tomaszewski

Psychiatrist · psychotherapist & supervisor

Marek Tomaszewski, MD, is a physician, a specialist psychiatrist, a certified psychotherapist and a supervisor-in-training accredited by the Scientific Section of Psychotherapy of the Polish Psychiatric Association. For many years he has been actively involved in founding and running non-governmental organisations; he is also an active entrepreneur and a keen traveller.

He is a graduate of the Medical Academy (now Wrocław Medical University) named after the Silesian Piasts in Wrocław. He completed psychotherapy training at the Department of Psychotherapy of the Jagiellonian University Medical College, and held clinical placements at the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology in Warsaw, at the same Department of Psychotherapy in Kraków, and at the "Dąbrówka" Centre for the Treatment of Neuroses and Eating Disorders in Gliwice.

For over 25 years he has run an independent specialist psychiatric practice. He also works as a psychotherapist and a psychotherapy supervisor, providing individual training supervision and working as a supervisor with entire clinical teams.

Professionally, he is particularly interested in developing optimally effective ways of integrating strictly medical interventions, such as pharmacological treatment, with complex psychotherapeutic work — both in the practice of an individual clinician and across whole clinical teams.

He attaches particular importance to understanding the dynamics and interaction of psychobiological, socio-cultural and technological processes, and their bearing on health and the risk of illness. Professionally he is especially drawn to the phenomenon of fatigue, considered both in strictly clinical terms and as a consequence of ongoing civilizational processes.

He seeks to integrate the medical and psychological knowledge that forms the basis of his professional training with his interests outside work — evolutionary biology and psychology, cultural and historical anthropology, history (with particular attention to theories of civilizational processes), art history and socio-economics. He is convinced that, given the complexity of the civilizational problems we face, it matters that they can be reflected upon from different cognitive, experiential and professional perspectives. This is precisely where he sees the particular value of taking part in the work of the Society.

He has many years of management experience — founding, leading and providing professional oversight of companies and organisational units delivering medical, educational and training services. He has served as medical director and head of the Neurosis Treatment Ward at the Centre for Neurosis Therapy in Moszna, coordinator of the psychotherapists' team at the Neuromed Neuropsychiatry Centre in Wrocław, and medical head of the clinical team at the Relatio Specialist Psychotherapy Clinic. He is currently medical director of the HarmonyMed Clinic for the Treatment of Civilization Diseases, president of the board of HarmonyMed sp. z o.o., and organisational head of the four-year Comprehensive Psychotherapy Course at HarmonyMed, accredited by the Scientific Section of Psychotherapy of the Polish Psychiatric Association.

He is an active member of numerous scientific and professional societies, including the Polish Psychiatric Association (and its Scientific Section of Psychotherapy), the Polish Association for the Treatment of Obesity, and the Lower Silesian Association of Psychotherapists. He was a founder and, for many years, a board member of the latter, and now sits on its Scientific Council; he also chairs the Lower Silesian branch of the Scientific Section of Psychotherapy of the Polish Psychiatric Association. He is president of the board of the Education for Health Foundation.

He has taken an active part in a range of scientific and professional congresses and conferences, as author or co-author of more than a dozen presentations — among others at the XIII Conference of Three Sections in Kraków (2017), the XVI Conference of Three Sections in Łódź, the Congress of the Health of Poles in Warsaw (2024), the XXV Days of the Institute of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy "Terrorised" in Warsaw (2015), the II Wrocław Psychotherapy Conference "The Body" (2016), and the I Lower Silesian Forum on Obesity in Wrocław (2023).

He is also a passionate traveller — over the past 35 years he has planned, organised and completed more than 200 longer and shorter journeys to over 100 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. A fascination with the complexity, diversity and non-obviousness of the world shapes both how he travels and where he goes. He is especially interested in how people from different cultural settings experience reality, and how internalised ideas, beliefs and cognitive models shape the way they live through and understand the world. He is drawn to rites, rituals, tribal festivals and various religious and communal activities. He also seeks out places where the beauty and richness of wild nature can be observed and experienced; on his travels he has visited several dozen national parks and reserves, with a particular focus on those where primates can be observed in their natural habitat.
